Susan Bull Riley

Having never been able to decide whether I prefer botanical watercolors over the looser brushwork and freedoms of oil painting, I am obliged to go back and forth between the two. Both mediums make their unique demands: the watercolors -- especially the botanical watercolors-- require precise drawing and careful planning whereas the oils demand more attention to tonal values, brushwork, and color harmony. In either medium, I’m a slave to composition.

Both forms reflect my obvious affection for subject matter from the natural world, and I hope they convey this love to the viewer.

My training in art has been on my own, seeking out the wisdom of living painters I admire and studying all I can of those who are gone. My academic training was in music, with an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and a masters in Baroque Flute performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. It’s hardly surprising that the music I am most inclined to play draws from both traditional and classical sources, much like the art I like best.
