Studio class follows the same model established by Ric Campman when adult classes were initiated at RGS. Adult and teen student/artists are often introduced to the materials and class ethic through Sequencing, a direct, non-threatening, and accessible approach to oil painting developed at RGS. Many new students like to begin with a few weeks of guided assignments, after which emphasis is on self-directed projects with Instructor support. Teachers begin to build a working relationship with each individual at the start of the semester. Interaction, is mainly focused on work-in-progress as students develop and complete their projects. One-on-one dialogue iis ntended to help clarify and deepen the artists' connection to their own process and their artwork. The weekly sessions, in a community of fellow artists, reinforce commitment and camaraderie and make the art-making gatherings rewarding, challenging, and fun. Students may choose to work in a group setting, or more privately in rooms that are quieter If they prefer. Instruction or guidance is based on individual student need and questions that arise throughout the creative process. This is a good class for people who are self-motivated, open to exploration, and want to establish a working practice of making art. Confidence and skills grow with passing weeks with the support of the teachers and the studio environment. Instruction is usually individual and introduced when the person asks, or seems ready and open to learning a technique, new media, or new concept. Most materials are provided - oil, acrylic, and watercolor paints; pastels and diverse drawing media; paper, brushes, aprons, rags, mediums. Some students choose to bring their own brushes, paints, and /or canvases for painting surfaces. The Sculpture room with its tools and materials is available to Studio students.
