Explore embroidery, or drawing with thread, through a modern intuitive approach. Pulling from the rich tradition of embroidery to create unique lines, forms, and texture with an emphasis on composition, color, and embroidery’s many applications. We will cover basic stitches and design, transferring your pattern onto fabric, choosing thread thickness and color, adding watercolor or pigment, and how to finish your piece for display. Materials will be provided and all students will leave with their project, extra thread, needles, and an embroidery hoop. There will be some class time for designing a pattern, but you may also bring any inspiration or fabric of your choosing.

Sunday  10 am - 3:30 pm

Workshop Flow: 

10-11am: Introduction & embroidery overview, materials, applications, examples, etc. Beginning to think about designs and inspiration for the project.

11-11:30am: Complete a stitch sampler, discuss techniques for manipulating thread and how to choose the right thickness for each application. Review of color, outlining a pattern vs. not.

11:30am-12pm: Begin work on design/drawing for the project, transfer onto the material.

12-12:30pm: Break for food

12:30-3pm: Finish design outline, and begin embroidery project. Time to ask questions, talk, have tea.

3-3:30pm: Discuss finishing methods for embroidery, so students can complete at home.
