Square Series 2022: My aim in this series was to work as directly as I could with color while eliminating as much superficiality as was possible. Each image is built with only squares, all edges are clear and defined, there are no diagonals or curves and there is no imagery. Each painting has been created with numerous layers, creating perceptible depth within the canvas and allowing squares to float above or below each other. This overlap of squares of various translucency, floating in fields of color, creates blends of color, shape and ratio as the viewer sees into the work. The overlapping squares that comprise the field of each piece are all sized to refer to the original 18”x24” dimensions of the canvas, with particular focus given to 3s and 1/3s. The ratios that underlie and support the composition of each work lend the overall image of each painting a logic, rhythm and coherence, though these dimensions and ratios are not central to the viewing experience. Brush stroke patterns have been left somewhat visible in an effort to remind the viewer of the continued existence of the human artist. The parameters and constraints that I have imposed on the paintings in this series have facilitated a meaningful forum for working directly with color. In an effort to work directly with some of the most basic ingredients of painting, to use only simple blocks of color and to forgo other ornamentation, I have been striving to achieve a plain, basic and accessible beauty.
Green Series 2023: This series of 9″x12″ unframed paintings are all explorations of green, with the final tone developed through a sequence of lightly colored transparent layers. Some of the works are single fields of color, and some works have distinct areas of color.
