January + Februrary 2022: Lydia Thomson | 30 Years at RGS

After 30 years of art making and working at River Gallery School, Lydia Thomson is retiring from her role as Artistic Director (not to worry, she’ll continue teaching with us into the future). To celebrate her contributions to RGS and the Brattleboro arts community, we will be showing her current work in walnut inks in Gallery 34 as well as a retrospective of some of her past work in our Main Street Studio.

“After focusing on oil painting for many years, I’ve recently been working almost exclusively with walnut ink. The medium is simple, yet demanding, requiring a degree of patience and persistence that needed some nurturing. Covid quarantine helped with that. This body of work reflects gathering and observing things that grow around my house (as well as other things that don’t). The ink, made from mushed-up black walnuts, sometimes feels like a magical potion. It keeps revealing itself.”
