Planning Your Visit

This guide provides accessibility information, details about the school environment, and what to expect when you arrive.

Getting to the School and Around Brattleboro

  • The Transportation Center Parking Garage and Moover Bus Stop: Located around the corner on Flat Street (approximately 200 yards away), this facility offers covered parking and an elevator. It also serves as a stop for the fare‑free Moover bus. Sidewalks with curb ramps and a marked crosswalk provide accessible pedestrian access between the Transportation Center and RGS.
  • Train Station: Brattleboro’s train station is located around the corner (approximately 100 yards away). It’s currently open during construction, and will soon be VT’s first-ever level boarding train platform. There are sidewalks with curb ramps and a marked crosswalk between the train station and RGS.
  • Nearby Food: The Brattleboro Food Coop, which offers prepared food and a large eating area, is next door and is ADA compliant.

Getting Around the School

RGS is mostly wheelchair-accessible. The building includes five classrooms with different levels of space and maneuverability. The ground floor is accessible by a ramp from the sidewalk on Main Street. The second floor is then accessible by an elevator.

  • Main Studios (2nd floor): The Front and Back Studios are two spacious rooms. The sinks are not ADA accessible.
  • Smaller Rooms (2nd floor): Two rooms that are smaller and may be harder to navigate with mobility devices:
    • The sculpture room is mainly used for children’s classes. Many tools and materials from the sculpture room can be moved to a larger classroom if needed for accessibility.
    • A quiet work library space is available for students who prefer a low‑stimulus space. This room is optional and never a required space to enter for participation.
  • Main Street Studio (ground floor): Accessible through the main entrance of the building at 30 Main Street.
  • Restrooms: Two gender‑neutral restrooms are located on the second floor. (No restrooms on ground floor, but second floor is accessible by stairs or elevator.) Restrooms meet clearance requirements for accessibility, but sink width and depth are not ADA compliant. Please contact office@rivergalleryschool.org or call 802‑257‑1577 for questions about accessibility.
  • Seating: Chairs and stools are available throughout the school.
  • Service animals: Service animals are welcome.
  • Offsite classes: Some programs take place at other locations. Contact us for accessibility details for those sites.

For accessibility questions or requests, contact office@rivergalleryschool.org or call 802‑257‑1577.

Sensory Environment

Some times of the week tend to be busier and or louder:

  • Weekday afternoons during after school programs can be louder.
  • Summer mornings during youth art camps can be busy and louder (a smaller quiet work room may be available)
  • Gallery Walk on the first Friday evening of each month can be crowded.

If you prefer a quieter environment, reach out for more details or to arrange for more private options for artmaking or gallery viewing.
